Signs & Symptoms of Cancer........!

What are the signs and symptoms of cancer?

The signs and symptoms of cancer depend on the type of cancer, where it is located, and / or when cancer cells have spread. For example, breast cancer can present as a breast lump or nipple discharge while metastatic breast cancer may present with symptoms of pain (if spread to the bones), extreme fatigue (lungs) or convulsions (brain). Some patients show no signs or symptoms until the cancer is advanced.

The American Cancer Society describes seven warning signs that cancer may be present and that should prompt a person to seek medical attention. The word CAUTION may help you remember them.

Change in bowel or bladder habits
A sore throat that does not heal
Unusual bleeding or discharge (for example, discharge from the nipple or "pain" that will not heal oozing material)
Thickening or lump in the breast, testicles, or elsewhere
Indigestion (usually chronic) or trouble swallowing
Obvious change in the size, color, shape, or thickness of a wart or mole
Persistent cough or hoarseness

Other signs or symptoms may also alert you or your doctor to the possibility that you have some type of cancer. These include:

Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite
A new type of pain in the bones or other body parts that can be steadily worsening, or come and go, but is different from the previous one had pain before
Persistent fatigue, nausea or vomiting
Unexplained low-grade fever may be persistent or come and go
Recurrent infections that will not be erased with the usual treatment

Anyone with these symptoms should see their doctor; these symptoms may also arise from non-cancerous conditions.

Many cancers are presented with some of the above general symptoms but often have one or more symptoms that are specific to the type of cancer. For example, lung cancer may present with common symptoms of pain, but usually the pain is in the chest. The patient may have unusual bleeding, but the bleeding usually occurs when the patient coughs. Patients with lung cancer often become short of breath and then become very fatigued.

Because there are many types of cancer (see next section) with many times more specific and nonspecific symptoms, the best way to learn about the signs and symptoms of specific types of cancer is spend some time researching the symptoms of an area the body in question. By contrast, a specific area of the body can be searched to find out what the signs and symptoms of a person should look into that area that are suspected of having cancer. The following examples are two ways to go to get information on the symptoms:

Use a search engine (Google, Bing) to find links to cancer by making a list of symptoms followed by the term "cancer" or if you know the type you want information about, (lung, brain, breast) uses the option MedicineNet search. For example, the list of "blood in the urine and cancer" will bring a person to websites listed potential organ systems of the body where the cancer can produce these symptoms.
Use a search engine as above and the list of suspected body area and cancers (eg, bladder cancer), and the person will see the sites that list the signs and symptoms of cancer in that area (blood in the urine is one of the several symptoms listed).

Also, if the cancer is known (diagnosed), then even more specific searches can list the type of diagnosed cancer and they can be questioned on Cancer (symptoms, tumor grades, treatments, prognosis and many other items).

The inquiry itself should not replace consultation with a health professional if anyone is worried about cancer.
